Is there a way to browse all subs?
Is there a way to subscribe to subs?
Is there a way to select and order subs in the top bar, i.e., to customize it for what I'd prefer to check on most often?
Is there a way to create new subs? (I'm assuming the answer to this one is something like "once you've been here long enough and demonstrated you're not a spammer".)
If any of these is possible, the way to do them is not obvious. My "settings" only shows display settings, block and friendlists, and a heading (but no content) for "Manage Badges". And looking at my user page shows a list of posts I've made, but nothing else.
I was a sporadic user of SaidIt, and found this while trying to find out what it went dark. Answers appreciated.
I've been checking in here off and on for a while. And I have the same questions. And why did saidit go dark?
Hang around, and once we know what happened, you will too
At least VOAT gave us a heads up before it went belly up...
LOL. The signs for the demise of SaidIt were VERY clear for yeeeeeears.
saidit went dark to overload this place with boring users.
here is my copypasta:
When poal was started a certain amount of users left voat. This created a selection that separated users into distinct groups — one who preferred a site that was deeply sketchy but had more users, and the other who preferred a site that was moderately sketchy but had less users. Though the choice seemed minor, the difference in quality between these two groups was observable.
Voat kept most of its users from leaving, and so remained the default hate reddit alternative. But to the chagrin of voat's owner or owner's handlers, poal was of decidedly better quality and rapidly became the real scene. They were failing to contain the opposition.
The voat handlers eventually decided to cut their losses. They observed that being the default hate reddit alternative while being continually bled of their more intelligent users made voat a corral for a very large herd of low IQ people.
They made the decision to close voat in order to flood poal with the entire mass of low IQ users they had unwittingly accumulated. In truly jewish fashion, they scheduled their "gift" for the goyims favorite holiday celebrating the birth of their savior.
All of this happened before AOU was even in charge. People always like to talk about how AOU banned them for a joke and whatnot, but what truly killed the site was this influx of users. You may not believe me on that. But any person of reasonable quality who goes to join poal now will find themselves among uninteresting, humorless, and unintelligent people and want to leave because of that long before AOU can ban them for a joke. Well, maybe not you, yogurtstains, but most people. In short, there was little AOU could have done, short of closing poal to new account registration immediately after voat's closure was announced. But that would've been a Godlike judgement call, and possibly not even his decision.
Anyway, the same thing obviously happened with saidit. The timing of it is pretty suspect.
Sarcasm or not, this doesn't help.
Not seeing a flood of the low IQ users you speak of. In fact, I'm thrilled to see so many of "the good ones" come over from SaidIt - and not the riffraff.
How so? This is not new. It's not a holiday attack. I came over here 2 years ago.
I haven't seen an explanation, but can imagine multiple scenarios.
Welcome!
Answer: Mismanagement.
Fuck magnora7.
Hi. Welcome.
So the default is browsing all subs. Right now we don't have a subscribe to sub feature, so what most people would think of being /all is the only view besides looking at a sub directly. Sub's get created when you post to it.
So in a way they are more like topics. They are case insensitive. Using PascalCase is recommended for aesthetics. Like this, /s/OneGroovySub. But no one is forcing you to use that. On the top bar you can see 'Top Subs'. That's what people post to the most. The top few have been posted to today, then this week, then this month, then this year, ordered by how many posts they get a year. That means what's relevant today is on top. The code that finds those subs also does the drop down auto-fill. That just has a longer threshold. You can do any sub you want but the ones that show up are the most popular.
I should probably make the manage badges section only show up if you have some since most users don't. Badges are handed out for various reasons. Usually just to give someone bling for something cool that sets them apart. The manage badges section just lets you turn off their visibility if you don't want to wear your bling where others can see it. But badges are also a part of the permission system for people with advanced permissions. For example a badge of any type let's people have more controls in the player in chat that's sometimes on.
Feedback question for people:
If someone doesn't have any badges should we:
Also, another tip. You have control over the sort factors here. Looking at the site through a few different modes can be fun. One interesting one is increasing 'proximity'. Then you can explore the site spacially. Vote on things you like, don't be afraid to downvote, and then refresh. You'll now see more posts based on what you liked. With that you can explore everything that's been posted in the past and see the best stuff (for you).
I suspect the main reasons comments are so limited here is that there's no way of viewing all your past comments or other's comments. A profile tab that would show comments sorted by created descending with links that would open the full thread the comment was in would be great. I had a lot more conversations on Saidit even though the user base was way smaller.
This is probably my number one request. I don't like to spam feature requests too often, but I think this one is worthy.
Noted. When I see a feature request, even if I've seen it before, it goes into my todo system. But I do note about 70 tasks a day and get done about 10. I merge everything from personal life to development in there. Tasks do get passed forward. Right now I'm working on some new cdn balancing features for gvid.
I think the main reason they are low is just numbers. People are more likely to join a conversation than start it. So to consistently get comments on every post when there are other posts with comments to draw users in requires a relatively high population. You have to have a good number of the outliers that are willing to be the first to comment.
One way around that is adding some commentary to your own posts. That pulls people in. If you've posted something then you've most likely seen the content (one would hope). Might as well share your thoughts on it. If we have a habit of commenting on our own posts we'll end up with a higher increase in comments than you'd assume.
Insightful.
I was trying to do this before SaidIt died, while also posting more. Recently since then, I've focused on adding comments to the front page banter to enliven the forum. I'll try to shift focus to breaking new ground.
The "New" comments feature is great. (I ctrl-F find the "new"s on the page - and would be easier/better if it were already highlighted.) I'm sure I still miss some responses to my comments. This will certainly increase a lot if I'm focused on breaking new ground - unless I have a way to manually control which of my (656) messages may be "read" and which remain "unread". The auto thing does not work for me.
Don't have much work lined up, don't have a Christmas deadline, and don't have a party to prep for - so I should be able to make more time free when not prepping The Lions' Den.
The more friction there is in performing an action, the less likely you'll be to take it, as proven in online shopping (the easier you can complete the purchase, with as few button clicks as possible, the more likely you'll complete it).
Couple more examples - I got notified of this reply by the mail icon. I click on "Expand conversation". That confusingly doesn't take me to this thread, but a view of all the comments I've made on your posts or other replies from you on other threads (there is a link to this thread next to "From x0x7" but it's not obvious what that link does).
I would perhaps, change "Expand conversation" to "See reply in thread" and have that go where the link next to "From x0x7" does now. Not even sure if the "Expand conversation" is at all useful but would be more clearly called "See other interactions with x0x7"
Of course this is all meant as constructive criticism. I appreciate your hard work in putting this site together.

For clarity it might be worth making distinctions. Some of these may not be practical or wanted, but I'm listing them so we can cross them off or not, and they might lead to better ideas, or be added to the feature wish list.

Thanks for the answers. Creating a sub by posting to a sub that doesn't exist yet is nifty, but not intuitive.
