On my DX and Kindle 3 I've never seen lockscreen ads, just nice portraits of various authors. I don't use Librerator anymore because I was missing the feature to search inside all my books, plus it was a bit slow. But it's great at displaying PDFs properly.
Yeah I had a few Kindles that are worthless now. I use the Kindle app on Windows to read my books now.

Yeah that's what I do, sideload everything via Calibre. An added bonus of never connecting to Wifi is you don't get lockscreen ads.
