Kinda depends on the circumstances. Sure they had a submarine, but what hardware and weapons did the US have? This could have been a smart move by the Ruskies so they can fight another day.

This is perhaps a good time for Uncle Sam to poke the Russian bear. Russia is weakened….a long quagmire of a war…oil is cheaper and must be discounted because theirs is sanctioned…America has successfully completed two complex and high profile missions.

France, Germany and Poland are preparing to send troops to Greenland to deal with the possibility of a US invasion there. Denmark has already sent hundreds of special forces troops. Trump seems to think he's playing some kind of a game, but, this is not a game.
I have some stock in a company that has a fleet of very large crude carriers. Since the US has taken a few competing tankers off the market, the stock has been going up.
Money's all it's about, right Guy? If you make money, it doesn't matter how many people get killed, or how many laws are broken. That can catch up to you, you know, Guy?
I was doing some portfolio work this morning. Another stock I own (ticker:GASS) has a fleet of pressurized tanker ships that haul propane, butane, ammonia, and like cargos. It’s gone up about 20% since I bought it this past fall.
As I’m doing my research, I learn that this fleet of tankers is part of the dark Russian fleet that is bypassing sanctions. In fact, there was an explosion aboard one of the ships loading a cargo of ammonium in Russia.
So, I’m making money playing both sides of this squabble. Cool.

The 3 imperial spheres are defining their borders, the USA has the most force at their disposal.
So the USA thinks. The USA has been wrong, many times, before. Lately, the USA has lost almost all its wars, although they always claim victory.
Might be about Panama Canal. Russia is supposed to be able to use it according to a treaty. But in reality they have been limited in using it.
