What's interesting is that this war has lost him numbers that would have been a given. 80% of the public gets locked into camps. For most politicians, it doesn't matter what you do. Your support will be the size of your camp. This is bad because politicians can do anything, including corruption (often), and they always have that trusty support. So why not do it?

But this war did the impossible. It broke the asymptotic barrier. Hard. Dumbest move possible.

But the only reason this metric matters is that it's a proxy for Republicans in general. Trump already has his last term locked in. Whenever there is a big move in poll numbers we need politicians to get the right lesson from it. Here we need Republicans to get that the more they support wars incouraged by a foreign country, the harder the midterm blue wave is going to hit.

The best thing Trump could do is pull out right now, demand nothing, and say he was wrong. That would actually score him points to say he was wrong about something ever. People would be impressed by that.

But he's not going to do that because he's playing underwater 5d checkers without a snorkle.
