It would be interesting if we didn't recognize the EU. All our treaties are with individual countries or with them collectively in an org we made. We actually don't need to recognize the EU as a sovereign entity. It's not a member of the United Nations. In that sense it isn't equal to the relationship of the US and the states, because individual states aren't UN members. If we wanted to we could treat the EU as being a lot more like the UN. Basically a very massive NGO, that pretends some rule making powers only for the countries that recognize it. Which we don't have to.

I think it would be a mistake to recognize an economic agreement as a country. When the US was formed it was instituted as a sovereign entity. It didn't just morph into being one. NAFTA is not a country nor a government. The EU is not a country or a government. Making standards that countries choose to follow also doesn't make something a country or government. The ISO is not a country.

I think it would be funny if we made it official that we don't recognize it as having authority. It wouldn't have any consequences since its members aren't necessarily following suit. But it would be funny to humble some trade agreement lackeys who need a reminder that they aren't a real government.
