I heard a theory that Coca-Cola wanted to change from sugar to high-fructose corn syrup and knew people wouldn't go for it, so they changed to New Coke and when they brought back Coca-Cola Classic, they replaced the sugar with HFCS. Enough time had elapsed that people didn't notice. I was too lazy to do the research.
